WOMEN IN CONSTRUCTION WEEK | MARCH 3 – 9, 2024

Women in Construction Week (WIC Week) celebrates and promotes the role of women in the construction industry. The National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) first created WIC Week in 1998 and the event continues to grow each year. The theme for this year’s WIC Week is “Keys to the Future” and celebrates the strength and knowledge of woman and the vital role they play in shaping the future of the construction industry.

In honor of “Women in Construction Week,” HazTek will be featuring the stories of several of our safety professionals who work out in the field. Look for our spotlight features all this week.

Women in Construction Week | Spotlight on Tanisha Norwood

HazTek Safety Professional Tanisha Norwood joined HazTek in 2015 and she will be celebrating 23 years of working as a Safety Professional, this November. While most of Tanisha’s family members are either in law enforcement or the military, there were not many from her family who went the construction route.

Throughout her career, Tanisha has had the pleasure of working with several Fortune 500 companies and she has worked all over the country, in practically all arenas of safety…

Women in Construction Week | Spotlight on Connie Rogers

HazTek Safety Professional Connie Rogers has been in the construction industry for almost 20 years, starting in this field after her children were grown. Her husband, Mark, traveled 9 months out of the year as a general foreman and assistant superintendent. He worked in the mechanical piping department within the power plant industry and Connie didn’t want to be at home alone. Mark told her that he would help her get her first job, but after that it was up to her.

Connie’s education started with an OSHA 10-hour and an OSHA 30-hour, along with her Emergency Medical Technician training. Her first experience was working in power plants for heavy industrial boiler outages. She started working with the boilermakers because there were no openings in the safety department at the time. Within two weeks, a safety position opened and that was the start of Connie’s safety career.

Women in Construction Week | Spotlight on Kit Flores

HazTek Operations Manager Kit Flores has had a long road through the safety profession, starting as field safety support to a General Contractor that built state-of-the-art stadiums, hospitals, and other public and commercial/industrial spaces. She has also provided safety support to work in chip manufacturing plants, auto manufacturers, and utility scale solar installations.

Kit came to HazTek in 2017. She started as an Owner’s Representative on a high-profile client office space and moved to auditing multiple projects; providing high-tech project support in the data center market; collaborating with demanding clients on corporate safety programs with global impact; and training workers in task specific safety requirements, precautions, and best practices.

Women in Construction Week | Spotlight on Dhaima Service

HazTek Safety Professional Dhaima Service emigrated to the United States from Kingston, Jamaica in August 2014. She decided to make this move to be with her ex-husband who worked as a construction safety professional. Dhaima has a bachelor’s degree in education which she obtained in Jamaica and worked as a teacher in elementary in secondary schools for ten years. She chose to seek a job in the education field to make it easier to find an open position and worked as a University instructor in elementary and middle schools and provided students with direct academic support. She wanted to work in the construction safety industry though — and had five years of experience in Jamaica working in safety — but did not have any construction experience, making it hard to break into this field.

Women in Construction Week | Spotlight on Sarah McCowen

HazTek Safety Professional Sarah McCowen started in safety by joining a safety committee at the factory she was working at over 10 years ago. She loved it so much that she decided to make safety her career.

Around 8 years ago, Sarah accepted her first safety job in construction, which was at a data center in Iowa. Since then, she has stayed in the data center industry, working on various projects in the Des Moines area. She has received multiple certifications, including the Associate Safety Professional (ASP).

Sarah started with HazTek at the very end of July 2023 and is a proud member of our team. She says, “While in the construction safety field, I have met some amazing women and I encourage and mentor them along the way…
